BACKGROUND

The African Green Climate Finance National Designated Authorities Network (AfDAN) is a Pan-African organization focused on mobilizing climate finance for adaptation and resilience- building efforts in Africa.
With the support of key Pan-African Organizations notably the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa) which are among the founding members, formation of AfDAN was first agreed upon in 2015 in Alexandria Egypt and further discussed during COP 23-Fiji in Bonn Germany in 2017 by the founding members. AfDAN commenced mobilization of members during COP 27 in Shamal El Sheik, Egypt in 2022 to support all African Countries especially-National Designated Authorities (NDAs), Direct Access Entities (DAEs), Focal Points (FPs) as well as civil Society Organizations to access funding from Green Climate Fund (GCF), Global Environment Facility (GEF), Least Development Countries Fund (LDCF), Adaptation Fund (AF), Climate Investment Funds (CIF) as well as Bilateral and Multi-Lateral Development Partners among others.

AfDAN in conjunction with Building Climate Resilience of the Urban Poor (BCRUP) secretariat led by the Government of Kenya, United Cities and Local Governments of Africa, UN-Habitat, Commonwealth Secretariat, African Research and Impact Network (ARIN) together with other partners notably the World Bank, Slum Dwellers International (SDI) and Habitat for Humanity have further identified and integrated with the subnational formations to facilitate rapid climate actions at the City and Local Governments levels given the nature of cause – effect of climate change arising from rapid urbanization.

The committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) during its 27th ordinary session held in Addis Ababa Ethiopia on 17th February, 2024 acknowledged the role of AfDAN in bringing African countries together to build their capacity to accelerate ease of access and enhanced mobilization of climate finance thus underscoring the need to create strong structures through AfDAN to spearhead climate finance mobilization for the continent (Annex I: Refer to decision 31).
